How Do We Work?

Choosing the right Editor for your work can be difficult!

Every writer has their own writing style, voice, strengths, and weaknesses. And, of course, not all Editors are created equally! At The Inkwell, we know that choosing the right Editor for your work is an essential step toward producing the book of your dreams. Writers put their blood, sweat, and tears into their work, and deserve an Editor that can help shape a book without compromising the author's vision and unique creativity.

Our Process

Getting Started

When you're ready to start the editorial process, we encourage you to reach out to as many of The Inkwell Editors as you want. Tell them about your goals and values, and they will tell you about their expertise and availability. Schedule multiple consultations. Have honest conversations about your editorial needs. And then, when you're ready, choose the Editor you want to work with!

*Keep in mind, the process may be different depending on your needs, but generally our process goes a-little something like this:

1. The Proposal

Once you have selected the Editor you want to work with, they will draft a project proposal for you. The proposal will outline the scope of editorial work they expect to perform on your manuscript, itemize the deliverables you can expect to receive back, and detail the overall project fee. Once you and the Editor agree to the scope of work and fee, they will draft a contract for you.

2. The Work

Once the contract is signed, you will send in your manuscript and your Editor will get to work! We offer comprehensive manuscript critiques, editorial evaluations, developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, beta reading, and more. Check out our Services and Rates here!

3. The Deliverable

After the Editor is through working on your manuscript, you can expect to receive your work back along with any notes/critique/diagnostic document the Editor creates for you. Then, you and the Editor will schedule a meeting to go through the feedback together.

4. The Follow Up

Some services (such as developmental editing) include a second follow up meeting that you and the Editor will schedule together after you have taken the feedback or critique and revised your work. This gives you a chance to discuss the revisions and make sure you're on the right track!
